Light Control Puzzle

January 22, 2008

In this puzzle there are four rooms.

Room A

Room B

Room C

The Control Room

In the control room there are three switches: switch 1, 2 and 3.  Each switch controls one of the light bulbs in room A, B or C.

You are in the Control Room.  You may turn the switches on or off.  It is up to you.  When you have done what you wish to the switches, you may then go into room A, B and C to see the effect.  When you have visited each of the rooms you may not return to the Control Room.  You will now know which switch operates which light bulb.

Solomon’s Sons

January 15, 2008

A man called Solomon told his three sons that when he died they would inherit his camels.  Sadly the day came when Solomon died and his brothers read the will.

The eldest brother was to inherit half of the herd of camels.

The middle brother was to inherit one third of the herd of camels.

The youngest brother was to inherit one ninth of the herd of camels.

The brothers had a problem because there were only 17 camels in the herd.  To try to solve the problem they went to their uncle.

“You may have one of my camels, so that you will have eighteen altogether,” he said.

“May we give you something for the camel, uncle?” the elder brother asked.

“No, nephew.  Whatever is given in love will come back to you.”

Work out how many camels each son inherited and if the uncle’s statement was true or false.
